The crisis rocking Rivers state Judiciary has reached its height with pockets of Protest from APC and loyalist of Gov. Rotimi Amaechi and counter protest by PDP and its members supporting the take of the NJC on the issue of who becomes the Chief of Rivers State. To compound the so many problems already foisted on the Rivers State political space, the Amaechi faction of the Rivers State House of Assembly has purported amended the Rivers State High Court Laws, 2001 to allow the Chief Registrar of Rivers State assign cases, a function which the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria permits only a Chief Judge of State to perform. The NJC, a body responsible for recommendation, promotion and discipline of judges has vowed to maintain its decision that the most senior Judge of Rivers State assume the functions of the Chief Judge of Rivers State or no one else. May God help Rivers State.
Questions have been raised about the legality of the High court Laws of Rivers State which is purportedly admended by some members of the Rivers State House of Assembly sitting in Government House Port Harcourt. The true remains that the law is unconstitutional for being inconsistent with section 271(4) of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria (as amended)
